What has been a highlight to your summer?
I think first I went to visit Sanjana in DC over the 4th of July. Kara and Wabi were also there and it was super cool to hangout there on the 4th. We went and saw all the national monuments and the fireworks were super cool. Last Friday all the seniors did a trolly, that was more a Chicago highlight, because I’ve never been on a trolly. But it was cool to get everyone together and hangout, we were driving around the city, like Lake Shore avenue. I planned the trolly because I knew people had done it in the past and I knew people would do it.
Have you been working? What is your job/what do you do?
Within Deloitte, I’m in their advisory practice, in internal audit and assurance. That's one of their market offerings of advisory. Right now i'm working on a tech assurance project where I test IT controls. I don’t have a technology background so it’s been an opportunity to learn more about the technology space and how we can provide solutions to our clients. Also in terms or working for Deloitte, it's been awesome to meet so many people from awesome universities and other closer universities that I’ve never met before. It’s also been cool to meet people from U of I that I didn’t know. There are at least 50 other interns working in Deloitte this summer. Also, another highlight is that we played all the BIG four accounting firms in kickball and we won't! It was a blast, it was so much fun! I spent like 3 hours just making posters. There’s a lot of extra curriculares like wellness events(yoga) and events to get to know more of the professionals and interns.
What did you learn over the summer?
One, I think that everyday is a learning experience. I learn something new everyday whether it be in work or being a professional. Making sure you put your best foot forward everyday. It’s not about who you know, it's about who knows you. I’ve taken it into consideration because if I’m not my all into a conversation or really connect with somebody it doesn’t really matter if they don’t know you. Somebody said that on one of my first days and even today I was sitting down with a managing director in assurance and I was the only person that’s reached out to him all summer. He told me to keep meeting people and get to know people if you want different opportunities.
Did you go on vacation? Where to/what did you do?
Right after school ended I went to Nashville with Scott. That was a highlight and cool because I’ve never been there and we really enjoyed the live music and food. Honestly Nashville is a blast. Old Crow.
Did you meet up with any BC friends over the summer? What did you do?
One, I think it’s super cool now that we are working in the city that we go to happy hour and get lunch together. I watched Elise run the half marathon this weekend. I’ve been able to get lunch with Elise, Noelle, Kara. WE have a lot of BC people at Deloitte, so I see Danny and James literally everyday. I love working with them and Sam and it’s been cool to do Deloitte stuff with my BC fam. The trolly was all BC people.
What are you most excited about for 1st semester?
I think this ear is going to be a little different because its my masters year. I think I’m most excited to meet all the freshman, I will be surrounded by them being an RA and a TA I’m excited to meet all them before I graduate and make those relationships before I leave. I’ll be taking 4 classes in the fall and 3 in the Spring for my masters.
Did you read any new books/watch any new movies you would recommend?
One of the books I’m reading is What Got you Here Won’t Get You There. It’s about what got you here, even if you are successful, that doesn’t mean that it will continue to help you be successful. That has been a really good book. The TOMS CEO wrote this book about his journey and creating TOMS and his whole process there. Start something That Matters by CEO of TOMS Blake Mikosky. IT was all about his journey into creating the brand and creating it around something that matters and having that social impact with his company. He surrounded his company around social impact. It helped me to see what I want my future to look like and how I can create an impact that goes beyond my day to day client work. I like books that are real and feel good books, either business or philanthropy.
Did you go to any concerts/festivals?
My favorite thing to do in the city is go to the fests. MayFest, Wicker Park Fest, Lincoln Park Fest, Greek Fest. I try to go to them all on the weekends and they all are usually different culture based. They have cool bands and what not. That’s another highlight this summer, experiencing everything that Chicago has to offer. Being in the city in the summer is the best time. There is so much to do and being by the lake and hanging out is great.
